ABOUT BREAST CANCER
No matter who you are or where you live, breast cancer may touch your life. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. Breast cancer is a disease characterized by cells in the breast that becomes abnormal and multiply uncontrollably, forming a tumor. If left untreated, malignant cells may eventually spread beyond the original tumor to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis.
Breast cancer is a disease of many types. Each type of Breast Cancer is identified by the cells in the breast that become malignant. Hormones also play a role in the development of certain types of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American women. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. Advances in breast cancer treatment mean many women can expect to beat the disease and maintain their physical appearance.
WARNING SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER
Due to the regular use of mammography screening, most breast cancers in the U.S. are found at an early stage before warning signs occur. The warning signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women. The most common signs are a change in the look or feel of the breast, a change in the look or feel of the nipple and nipple discharge. Other signs are swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast.
The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus. The cervix connects the vagina (the birth canal) to the upper part of the uterus. The uterus (or the womb) is where a baby grows when a woman becomes pregnant. Cervical cancer is preventable with regular screening tests and follow-up. It is also highly curable when found and treated early. Cervical cancer often occurs in women over age 30, but all women are at risk of cervical cancer.
WARNING SIGNS
HPV (human papillomavirus) virus and bleeding or discharge from the vagina. If you have any of these symptoms see a healthcare professional.
